After a blissful and tranquil day with my best friend, Sarah, yesterday, I thought that it was only right that I based this week’s wishlist on Luxury Spas in Cumbria that I hope to visit (or, in some cases, revisit)! Now that we’re in our thirties, and apparently “proper grown-ups”, we think that we should be spending our time going on spa days, as opposed to pub crawls (they’re overrated anyway- you’ll only find me getting drunk in the comfort of someone’s house now)!
I am extremely lucky to live near some of the most impressive and, let’s face it, opulent spas in the UK. The Lake District is inundated with spas, health clubs and beauty salons. Here are the ones that I either rate highly- and would love to go back to- or that I am dying to visit sometime.
I’ve been coming to The Bannatyne Spa for a few years now, mainly with Sarah or my Mam, and we have never had a bad experience. I think that this spa is sometimes overlooked when it’s thrown in with some of the big hotel spas in the Lake District, but it’s a firm favourite of mine.
The treatments are amazing, and the staff are professional, talented and helpful. The relaxation room, with a combination of water beds and heated loungers is the perfect place to chill out before and after a treatment. A spa day here can cost as little as £39, and there is always some kind of special offer- often two for one (hence why we visit so often). There’s a first class gym, if you’re into that, and the pool area has two jacuzzis, a sauna, a steam room and a spa pool… perfect for relaxing and unwinding.
There’s also a cafe where you can get breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks that don’t cost you an arm and a leg. I particularly liked my poached egg, lentil and pesto salad yesterday.
Don’t discount The Bannatyne Spa if you’re looking for affordable luxury- it’s not to be missed!
Set in phenomenal grounds in the Western Lake District, Armathwaite Hall and Spa is just 15 minutes from Workington, and close to the picturesque towns of Cockermouth and Keswick. This hotel is as impressive as it is luxurious, and I have been lucky enough to go for three spa days here. Unfortunately the price tag of a spa day is pretty hefty; you’re paying for the surroundings and the facilities. For £75 (£80 on Saturdays) you can have a half day (four hours) spa experience which includes a 30 minute face or body treatment. The full day package (10am-6pm) is £129, or £139 for a Saturday.
It’s definitely worth treating yourself to a visit to the spa here- the outdoor hot-tub, overlooking the gardens, is a huge draw and just the start of it. Armathwaite also boasts the following to make your spa day memorable:
- 16m infinity edge pool, 1.2m deep and overlooking beautiful gardens.
- Hydrotherapy pool with hydro jets under side benches, neck shower and mood lighting.
- Aroma room: with heated walls a cross between and steam room and a Tepidarium.
- Steam room: a traditional and spacious steam room with stunning Amethyst Madonna Crystal Cave and feature lighting centrepiece.
- Traditional sauna with windows overlooking the decked patio and garden.
- Tropical shower: a hot or cold option with lights and essence for further enjoyment.
- Rain dance shower: a pulsating water sensation to refresh and revive.
- State of the art gymnasium with Life Fitness Elevation series and USB work out memory.
- Spa lounge with feature central fireplace and dining area.
- 10 luxurious treatment rooms including one couples room with whirlpool bath.
- Hush tranquillity room with veranda looking over gardens and fells.
- Dedicated manicure and make-up area.
It really does encapsulate the luxury of the Lake District and what we have to offer here.
Now this is a spa I’ve not yet visited, but I’ve heard amazing things from family and friends. Appleby Manor Country House Hotel is surrounded by the inspiring mountains and fells of the Lake District, North Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales. An inspiring location! The facilities here are unique and indulgent. The spa uses Elemis, OPI and Lava Shells, to name but a few brands. There is the Aqua Thermal Journey comprising of several different heat experiences and hydrotherapy pool with Massage loungers, bench, volcano pads and shoulder cannons… When can I go?!
Full spa days cost from £99, with a half day costing from £60 (including lunch, afternoon tea or an evening cheeseboard).
I visited the spa at The Daffodil Hotel, Grasmere, when it first opened. Unfortunately the hotel was majorly affected by the flood last year, and it had to undergo major renovations. I’m dying to try it since it has re-opened! It promises to give you a “Spa journey like no other”… Yes, please! Features include a Thermal Pool, Sauna, Steam Room and Tepidarium. Half spa days will cost you £80, and full days start at £95. I’m so pleased that The Daffodil has managed to reopen and come back stronger after the 2015 floods.
The Gilpin, near Windermere
The is not for the faint hearted, but it is the most luxurious, bespoke and unique spa package that the Lake District has to offer. The Gilpin is a five start hotel and lake house with a difference. The owners are a family team who are dedicated and determined to provide guests with an unforgettable experience. There are five detached lodges, each with king size beds and an en-suite spa. They’re set to invigorate all of the senses. Each lodge has it’s own convertible treatment area, steam room, rain maker shower, free standing oval stone bath, outdoor sauna and hydrotherapy hot-tub. b
