Week 1 Update:
Considering I’ve had two days in Edinburgh this week (where we ate and drank A LOT), I am happy to say that I have lost 2lbs, thanks to Rejuvenated! They do fill me, so I’m snacking less. The tablets may well be having a positive impact on my metabolism too. Although I’ve kept active, I did indulge a bit much earlier in the week, but I’ve still had a loss. Excellent! This takes my BMI down to 30.9! These shakes are delicious, check them out at Rejuvenated!
Since getting into fitness, and improving my workouts, I’m more and more interested in what I can do with my nutrition to aid my health (not necessarily to aid weight loss). I’ve really been increasing the amount of protein in my diet, and I’ve tried to be more careful about which carbs I eat.
Those of you who know me will know that I’m a huge advocate of the brand Rejuvenated, and their collagen shots (Twitter @collagenshots) for improving the appearance of my skin (from my acne to my fine lines, there’s a definite improvement here). But did you know that they also specialise in a range of smoothies and products to help aid with weight control and nutrition? The thing that I love the most about the brand is their ethos to use only natural ingredients in all of their products! There are no hidden nasties in anything that they sell, and they have quality and goodness at the heart of their range.
I received my products today (the protein smoothies in a) Chocolate and b) Banana and butterscotch, and the Be-Skinny reset tablets), in prompt time and well packaged. I’m going to be testing these products out over the next few weeks, so will write a more comprehensive review at the end of my trial. Like when I collect my collagen shots from Gemma and Gem’s Retreat in Workington, I was filled with excitement at the prospect of trying more from the Rejuvenated range.
For today, I’m going to talk to you about the science bit, which is more interesting than you would think, especially when you compare Rejuvenated’s products with another “shake” I’ve recently trialled called Celebrity Slim – which is a meal replacement shake to aid weight loss. More on that product later.
Ok, so the first product I want to talk about is the Protein Smoothie in the two variations that I have to try. The product is pitched as a “delicious protein dietary drink to aid with weight control and keep you full on the go!” The part that intrigued me the most was the keeping you full for longer, as this is my downfall; I get hungry and then snack on things I shouldn’t snack on. The smoothies are also suitable for a wide range of diets: gluten free, lactose free, suitable for diabetics, suitable for vegans. The Protein Smoothie contains green tea for energy, flax seeds for an omega boost, fibre and 100% natural ingredients. When mixed with water, the smoothie is just 99 calories (and tastes just fine, may I add). The key ingredients that make this smoothie so effective are:
- Pea protein: this is highly digestible and has no negative health controversies associated with it. You’re less likely to be allergic to this than soy too… Bonus!
- Glucimannas and inulin: these fibres create the feeling of fullness. Inulin has enough health benefits to impress even the fussiest of customers, the main two being the promotion of the growth of intestinal bacteria and the increase of calcium absorption.
- Green tea: a wonder ingredient that is a commonly recognised antioxidant (just the term antioxidant sounds good for you). Not only does green tea help to fight disease (which is good for people like me with a low immune system), but it boosts your metabolism by 4% without increasing heart rate.
- Stevia: this is sweeter than sugar, but low in calories and carbohydrates. Because this has a negligible effect on blood glucose, it is ideal for people on carbohydrate-controlled diets. Which, again, is good news for me!
- Flax: giving you that healthy boost of omega 3.
It’s really important to note the nutritional value, particularly the amounts of fat and carbohydrates.
I have tried the chocolate flavour, and the banana and butterscotch, and both taste really surprisingly pleasant- some protein smoothies and shakes are, quite frankly, disgusting. This is not the case. Yep, they taste “healthy”, but it’s a taste which is more than tolerable, it’s desirable. All three flavours- add strawberry into the mix- are available here for £17.95 for 14 servings (thats a week’s worth). I drink two of these a day (in place of breakfast and lunch), with healthy snacks and a decent evening meal. I genuinely don’t feel hungry in between smoothies either, which I did when I’ve tried other shakes or smoothies (Weight Watchers shakes left me starving!).
Alternatively, there’s an offer on for all three flavours, plus the Be Skinny Re-Set for £49.95 (RRP £78.80). Now that is impressive it! Get this here before the Shape Up for Summer ends.
Whilst I’m on the topic of workout shakes, I’ll discuss the Celebrity Slim product.
This costs £21 for a week’s worth of the shake and you take it three times a day, and have one healthy meal with this. I have tried the strawberry flavour, but it’s available in chocolate and vanilla too. The ingredients are similar, but the huge difference between this and the Rejuvenate products are the levels of carbs. They’re huge in Celebrity Slim! Not ideal at all. It would explain why the Celebrity Slim shake tastes far sweeter, and much more like a standard milkshake, than the Rejuvenated products. It doesn’t fill me with much confidence, if I’m honest. The calorific intake in one serving of the Celebrity Slim is 224cals, 125cals more than in Rejuvenate’s Protein Smoothies. And can I reiterate, the former does not fill you as much as the latter. In my opinion, the Rejuvenate smoothie is more effective than the Celebrity Slim.
The second product from Rejuvenate is the packet of Be Skinny Re-set tablets. They’re formulated to reset your metabolism. Herbs, vitamins and minerals come together in these little capsules to assist in healthy weight management. The active ingredients are chromium, copper and zinc; all three contribute to a healthy metabolism and steadying blood sugar levels. You take one of these capsules with breakfast and lunch, and they are to be used as a part of a well constructed and balanced healthy lifestyle, not as a replacement for food.
In a month’s time I will comment on the overall effectiveness of the products I am testing. My starting points are:
- Weight- 14 stone 3 lbs (after losing my 7lb holiday gain).
- BMI- 31.2
- Dress size- 16
I can’t wait to show you the results in a few week’s time! What weight control aids/protein shakes have you used and found successful before? Let us know in the comments!
